Although there are thousands of legitimate work-at-home jobs available, it’s always a good idea to proceed with caution. There are plenty of less than stellar opportunities out there, promising big results with little or no return. While some of these are just bad gigs, others are straight up scams, looking to prey on dreams of those looking for a real work-at-home jobs.


Skilled writers are always in demand, particular in an age when “content is king.” Web-based marketing plans call for onsite content, as well as blogs and supporting efforts requiring proficient copywriters. In addition to general topical material, web and print resources call for experts in various fields, which keeps writers working from home at all levels within the modern communication marketplace.

A transcriptionist listens to audio files and types up what they hear. This is an excellent work-from-home option for anyone with good keyboarding skills and great hearing — since sometimes the audio files are not the best quality and you will have to listen closely (or rewind several times) to accurately transcribe the message. As with mystery shopping, you do need to be careful of transcription scams, which will often ask you to pay for an expensive transcription certification course. Fay — I have a few posts up that list ways to get fast cash, but if you’re looking for bill money, those might not help much because the things I listed there are mostly good for gas money, pizza money, etc. Just a little extra. I know that with the phone positions there’s often a few weeks or more worth of wait time while you’re getting a background check done, training, and so forth. The sales positions (things like Helios, which has actually received negative feedback lately from some of my readers) could probably have you up and working and making money quickly. I do have a post on this blog covering Helios. But not everyone likes sales, so that may not be the route you’d want to take.

The company has been in business since 2010 and service the needs of their clients nationwide. They offer competitive pay which is not advertised anywhere on the internet. eaHelp mainly looks for self-motivated individuals that are comfortable with navigating through various computer programs.
LeapForce and Appen Butler Hill are two major firms that hire search engine evaluators. (Appen also hires social media evaluators, who analyze the relevancy of a company’s social media news feed.) Appen has potential employees complete an application (project-specific screenings and language proficiency tests may also be required), and LeapForce asks candidates to take and pass a three-part qualifying exam. Both companies also require that you have a new computer, smartphone, high-speed internet, anti-virus software, certain operating systems and be a little internet-savvy.
So create Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest accounts for your blog or business, or offer to do it for someone else you know (for free) just so you can learn how. And it might even be worth taking on one of those internships I mentioned above just for the experience. Most of the internships are for small businesses just getting started, and sometimes turn into paying positions if you perform well as an intern.
Until you've asked, don't exclude this option. You may be able to take your current job home by writing and submitting a telecommuting proposal. Start by checking your company's telecommuting policy, do your research, and write up a flex time or work at home plan. Make sure your proposal includes all of the benefits to the company – including the cost to recruit and hire a new employee to replace you if you decide to quit.

I know, this list isn't very long, but there REALLY are a lot of social media jobs available. Most companies that need social media managers only have one or two positions to fill. Generally, these positions are posted on their own website, and the company will utilize an online job board. #6 – Social Media Jobs – This is a private Facebook group with over 20,000 members, and social media jobs are posted here quite regularly. Again, not all will be remote, but because it's a Facebook group and comments/chatting are encouraged, you can always just ask the person who posted the job within the group whether the job they shared is remote.

Actually, no one really makes a career at it, but user testers can pick up some extra work reviewing websites or mobile applications that may still be in development. You don't even necessarily have to be very knowledgeable about the Internet because some developers want the beginner's point of view.
