There are plenty of less than stellar opportunities out there, promising big results with little or no return. While some of these are just bad gigs, others are straight up scams, looking to prey on dreams of those looking for a real work-at-home jobs.
One of the hottest work from home jobs out there right now for online tutors is teaching Chinese children English through VIPKID. These and other advanced strategies are often beyond the technical level attained by small businesses and internet entrepreneurs, prompting them to outsource jobs to experts. From building and hosting websites, to providing and managing content, freelance work from home opportunities are widespread for IT professionals.
It's not necessary to have a past career as a teacher to become an online tutor, although it can certainly help. If you are well-versed in a particular subject, you can become a tutor in that subject for students who need help with their school work. There are sites like Tutor.com and Chegg that match tutors with students who need their help. You will only need to have a computer and a solid internet connection — and potentially a video conferencing program, as many students prefer to meet with you via video call. Generally, you can choose your own hours, which makes this an ideal job for stay-at-home parents.
Furthermore you could use a course platform to create and teach online courses on any topic you choose — this is becoming super popular and is something we ourselves do (we have an online course we teach on social media marketing). Either way — most people typically need a platform to accomplish either of these and a blog is typically the easiest way to accomplish that (although that in and of itself can take months to years to really gain traction). From my own experience, I’ve used Textbroker to make quick cash for bills. They pay every week on Fridays and if you work a lot every day, you can usually have a substantial amount accumulated by the end of the week — definitely more than the $10 cash out threshold. The only bad thing there is you never know how much work they’ll have up to grab from the order board. But I would say that for me Textbroker has been an excellent source for getting bill money together when I need it quick. Amazon Mturk is another idea. You can cash out there at just $1 and it transfers to your bank account. There is an entire sub-forum about Mturk over at the Work Place Like Home forum where people discuss the best tasks to accept to make the most money. Mturk has a reputation for being just an extra money option, but I know for a fact there are some people making more than just extra money over there.


How do I get started? I have a potential opportunity to work for a mid sized company. It would be a good career move (more pay, better title, more responsibility), however, the company does not have any flex options. The manager has said there is no potential to work remotely and although there are no fixed hours, most people seem to get to work much earlier than I would be able to. I only have experience working in large corporations. Do you think this is typical of smaller/mid sized businesses. Also, anyone know of smaller companies that do offer flex opportunities (looking for Strategy/Finance type roles). Appreciate any thoughts!
